Stewart broker asst. pleads guilty
Ex-Merrill Lynch assistant Douglas Faneuil pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for taking a payment to keep quiet about alleged insider trading involving Martha Stewart. She sold nearly 4,000 ImClone shares one day before the biotech announced bad news and the stock tanked. Merrill fired her broker, Peter Bacanovic, and Faneuil.
SEC: Firms must explain pro forma
The regulator is preparing a rule to force companies that report "pro forma" results to explain how they differ from earnings that follow U.S. accounting standards, Bloomberg said. Pro forma numbers exclude certain costs like merger expenses and were often used by tech firms in the '90s to make results look more favorable.
