An up day for all 30 Dow stocks shoved the blue chip index to a huge gain Tuesday. The Dow vaulted 4.6%, the S&P 500 4%. NYSE volume closed above average, but below Monday's level.
Forest Laboratories exploded up 7.84, or 10%, to 89.95, hitting a 52-week high on more than three times its normal trade.
The maker of generic prescription and over-the-counter drugs said it expects fiscal second-quarter sales and earnings to beat Wall Street estimates, thanks largely to sales of its anti-depressants.
Fresh Del Monte Produce notched its third straight up day, rising 1.16 to 26.75 on close to double its usual turnover. The grower and marketer of a variety of fruits and other produce signed a deal to sell its interest in Internationale Fruchtimport Gesellschaft Weichert. Several home builders fared well. Lennar climbed 1.77 to 57.55, M/I Schottenstein Homes 1.12 to 32.62 and KB Home 1.75 to 50.59, all on fast trade. The 54th-ranked Building-Residential/Commercial group rallied 3.5%.
AutoZone jumped 2.42 to 81.28 on volume 61% above its 50-day average. ...
