Beware Of Humanitarianism

As emphasized by "Anti-U.S. Tone In Germany Puts Schroeder On Defensive" (National Issue, Monday), German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has postured as a high-minded advocate of international peace, trust, compassion and coexistence.

In reality he knows very well who will get the first and largest dose of Saddam Hussein's nuclear venom as Saddam caters to be a hero of the Arab people. Schroeder will undermine any nation that could frustrate his scheme. World War II anti-Semitism seems still alive and well in Germany now, and it masquerades today as peace-loving humanitarianism.

If we hesitate with a pre-emptive strike, then we will let Saddam choose which timing is best for him and we can feel really good about our forbearance as we are absorbing the fury of his mass destructive power. Germany, France and others will then be proud of us and will gallantly stand aside as they encourage us to fight the good fight right down to the last American.

Then, while we in America are hunkered down in hastily dug shelters, holding our gas masks, munching our last crusts, we hear on our emergency radios the statesmanlike voices of Al Gore and Sen. Tom Daschle excoriating our president for lacking the simple courage to make that pre-emptive strike, which they have continuously, they solemnly intone, urged on him.
