Chain-store sales weaken again
Same-store sales at major discount and department chains fell 0.8% last week from the prior week, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and UBS Warburg said. That followed a 1.7% drop. For Sept., BTM sees sales up just 1.5% from a year ago, which is "incredibly weak" considering the hit retail took after the terror attacks. Instinet Research said month-to-date same-store sales were running 0.7% below sales in Aug.
Aug. construction spending falls
Spending fell a bigger-than-expected 0.4% from July to an annual rate of $829.8 bil. Private commercial construction sank 2% to $159.2 bil, its lowest level in six years. Residential spending dipped 0.2% to a $407.5 bil rate. Public construction rose 0.8% to a $202.7 bil rate.
WTO to hear claims against U.S.
Canada, which the U.S. says subsidizes its mills, is contesting duties of about 27% on imports of softwood lumber the U.S. imposed in May. Brazil's complaint is about Florida's tax of 3 cents a gallon on imported orange juice concentrate. Proceeds have been used to promote Florida orange juice. Rulings usually take a year.
