Slowing sales hit teen clothiers
Newly public Aeropostale plunged 58% after slashing views for the rest of the year because of sparse mall traffic and bad fashion timing. The news hit a wide swath of clothing retailers, long considered recession-proof: Wilsons Leather lost 13% and Wet Seal and Urban Outfitters both lost 10%. The Retail-Apparel group was the big loser Tuesday, shedding 3.8%.
Wal-Mart plans expansion for '03
The world's No. 1 retailer plans to add about 8% more selling space next year. Wal-Mart Stores will also open 45-55 discount stores and 200-210 Supercenters. About 140 of the latter will come from relocations or expansions of existing discount stores. But consumer confidence has been waning.Wal-Mart on Monday pared back its Sept. sales growth outlook.
** Warnaco plans to emerge from bankruptcy in early '03 and is in the hunt for a new CEO and board members. The lingerie maker filed for Chapter 11 in June.
