The nation's manufacturing activity declined in September, breaking a seven-month growth streak.
The Institute of Supply Management's manufacturing index dropped to 49.5 from 50.5 in August. That's lower than its 50.2 three-month average, but above September 2001's 46.2. Economists were expecting 51.
A reading above 50 shows manufacturing activity is expanding; below 50, it's contracting.
September's numbers marked the first time the index had dipped below 50 since January.
Norbert Ore, the institute's chairman, said the manufacturing sector has "softened significantly."
"Stagnant and sluggish are apt descriptions for manufacturing at this time," Ore said.
