Internet gaming is caught in a storm.
Net casinos are a big way of making money on the Web. But over the last year, federal and state officials have pushed to curb such activities.
Under pressure from public officials, seven of the 10 top credit card issuers, including Citibank, have agreed to stop processing payments for online gaming.
Online gaming boosters say actions like this are putting speed bumps in the way of their $4.2 billion industry.
The Interactive Gaming Council, a trade group for the online gaming industry, is one of the biggest critics of these moves. The group represents makers of online gaming software and Net casinos. Many Net casinos are based in legalized gambling states or on American Indian reservations.
Keith Furlong, the group's deputy director, says strong regulation of online gaming will offset any ills linked with the activity.
