Intel chief: chip rebound murky

CEO Craig Barrett says a recovery from the worst-ever downturn hinges on corporations becoming profitable again, and it's unclear when that will happen. Though he sees some uptick from holiday PC sales, Intel cut the upper end of Q3 sales views to $6.7 bil from $6.9 bil.

HP: service business stabilizing

The PC maker says demand for services hasn't deteriorated, despite EDS' troubles. An HP exec said the company has several large deals in the pipeline to manage computer systems of large firms, the fastest-growing services specialty. EDS warned last month that it would report few new outsource deals.

** HP sued EMC Corp. for patent infringement and asked a U.S. judge for damages and injunctive relief to stop EMC from using technology from seven HP patents.
