UAL unions join up in labor talks
In a meeting with the airline's five labor unions, new CEO Glenn Tilton said bankruptcy is not a foregone conclusion. The unions gathered in their first joint strategy meeting since workers got control in '94. They hope to minimize layoffs but cut costs enough to qualify for a $1.8 bil federal loan guarantee.
Northwest plans to cut 350 jobs
The No. 4 U.S. airline hopes to cut the full-time positions via a voluntary leave program that lets workers keep seniority rights and travel and recall privileges. They'd be able to keep getting medical benefits or get unemployment pay. About 175 have left. Northwest Air also laid off 670 temps hired for the summer travel season.
