Hovnanian Q3 EPS surged 101%
The home builder earned $1.43 a share ex-charges, beating raised views by 68%. Sales rose 38% to $704.6 mil. Hovnanian Enterprises' backlog grew 20% to a record 4,403 homes. The firm sees $1.12-$1.22 a share in Q4. Analysts expect $1.02, up 38%. Hovnanian jumped 13%. IBD's building group rose 4.8%, the day's best.
- Beazer Homes' Aug. orders rose 62% to 1,392 units. Excluding its recent buy of Crossman Communities, orders rose 22%.

Qwest gets amended loan deal
The telecom confirmed after the close it reached a deal with banks to amend terms of a $3.39 bil credit pact. Qwest will reportedly be permitted to carry more debt. With the threat of bankruptcy eased, the focus shifts to profitability. Qwest rose after hours after gaining 10% in regular trade on reports of the deal.
