Union Takes Exception
"Labor's Costs Are An Easy Target, But Not Best For Ailing Carriers" (A1, Aug. 21) reports that "Southwest's unions are company unions -- they represent only Southwest workers."
This statement is not true. The flight attendants for Southwest Airlines are members of the Transport Workers Union of America Local 556; the ramp and operations employees are members of TWU Local 555.
The TWU is a national union affiliated with the AFL-CIO and represents workers from several different airlines, including American Airlines. American pilots are represented by the Allied Pilots Association, and the flight attendants are represented by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants. By the definition in the article, those are company unions. This would seem to negate the opening example as to why Southwest is profitable and others are not.

No Sympathy For Gaza Settlers
Regarding the photo (A1, Thursday) showing a Jewish man peeking out of a hole left by a mortar shell in a house in the Jewish settlement in the illegal territory of the Gaza strip: Am I supposed to feel sorry for this person that is living in a land that is not his? Should I have felt sorry for the Iraqis as some were killed upon illegally entering and trying to take over Kuwait? Or the Nazis as they entered and occupied Poland and France?
