The old man of the video game world is succeeding on Wall Street, thanks to the elder statesman of skateboarding.
Activision Inc., founded in 1979, has ridden its partnership with skateboarding icon Tony Hawk to new financial heights in recent years.
The company is cashing in on the rising popularity of extreme sports among the couch-surfing set with its Tony Hawk Pro Skater and other extreme sports titles.
Over the last few years, the franchise has expanded with athlete-endorsed games for everything from BMX bikes to wakeboards.
The fourth Tony Hawk title is slated for a November release. Activision has signed with the skater for game rights through 2015.
"The early vibe on (Tony Hawk) is very good . . . in terms of game quality and consumer excitement," said Activision Executive Vice President Kathy Vrabeck.
