Ball to acquire German can maker
The food packager shot up 7% to 49.81 after saying it'll buy Schmalbach-Lubeca for $887 mil. Including debt, it's a $1.18 bil deal. The buy makes Ball No. 2 in the European can market. Schmalbach makes over 12 bil aluminum and steel beverage cans and can ends annually.

FTC OKs Conoco-Phillips merger
The $15 bil merger will create the No. 3 U.S. oil and gas firm. Approval was expected. But Conoco and Phillips Petroleum must sell refineries in Utah and Colo., as well as some ops and assets in other states. The firms announced the deal in Nov. The combined ConocoPhillips will have about 17,000 U.S. gas stations.
