UAL's cost-cutting plan doesn't fly
Pilots and attendants ripped United Airlines' plan to lop $9 bil off labor costs over six years. The world's No. 2 carrier wants $1.5 bil in labor concessions, the bulk of $2.5 bil in annual savings it says it needs to stay aloft. Pilots, who agreed to wage cuts in June, said the new demands are unacceptable. Flight attendants also rejected wage cuts.
American Air sets standby fee
To cut costs and encourage travelers to buy more expensive tickets, the world's No. 1 carrier will now charge $100 for customers who want to fly standby on tickets for travel next year. AMR's American also dropped the one-year grace period on missed flights after Oct. 1 for nonrefundable tickets. US Air made similar changes a few days earlier.
- Midwest Express flight attendants said they will strike random flights after failing to reach a labor deal with the regional carrier.
