There's no other company quite like Central European Distribution Corp. Though based in Sarasota, Fla., and run by Americans, it operates entirely in Poland.

Its business there: selling booze.

The firm's strange story began about the time the Berlin Wall fell. The father of current CEDC Chief Executive William Carey was running an outfit that exported agricultural goods to Poland.

The younger Carey was coming off an unsuccessful stint as a golf pro. He and his father visited Poland and, the story goes, tried and failed to buy a beer. An idea was born.

The elder Carey fronted his son $400,000 to try to make a go of it as a Polish drink distributor.
