It's been a stormy couple of years for the semiconductor industry. That includes the companies that make chip equipment. There is, however, a silver lining.
A VLSI Research Inc. report released last month shows that U.S. gear makers continue to hold most of the top spots in the top 10 sales list.
Ranked by sales, Applied Materials Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., is still top dog. It posted $2.31 billion in sales in the first half of 2002. Its closest rival is Japan's Tokyo Electron Ltd. TEL had $1.14 billion in sales in the same period.
The No. 3 spot went to Netherlands-based ASML Holding NV, which sold $738.6 million in gear. ASML held the No. 5 spot the same period in 2001.
