Not to be out-trumped by a new/old rival, printer king Hewlett-Packard Corp. is moving downstream to protect its leadership.
On Wednesday, it plans to unveil products, price cuts and a Web site, all geared to small and midsize businesses.
Those moves come seven days after personal computer king Dell Computer Corp. entered the printer market. But analysts say this is no knee-jerk reaction.
"HP's been revamping their entire product line for about a year," said Steve Baker, an NPD Group Inc. analyst. "This wasn't something that just happened. It's been in the works for a while."
Still, he says the actions show that HP isn't going to take a back seat to Dell.
"HP's being very aggressive," said Baker. "They realize even though they've got a lion's share of the market, the market's changing. More competition is coming."
