Senate, House ready airline aid
The House's $3.2 bil package and the Senate's $3.5 bil plan passed their respective appropriations panels attached to separate Iraq war funding bills. Both versions reimburse airlines for security costs. The Senate version also helps with high-end liability insurance aid to unemployed airline workers.
Air Canada flies into bankruptcy
Canada's No. 1 airline by far will keep flying while it negotiates with creditors. Air Canada, suffering from 9-11 aftershocks, a weak economy and now war in Iraq and the SARS virus, needs to rework nearly $8.8 bil of debt and seek big concessions from unions. On March 20, Air Canada announced it would cut 3,600 jobs.
AMR surges on labor union deals
American Air's parent rose 43% to 3 after it got concessions that will save $1.8 bil a year and help forestall bankruptcy. Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan upgraded the stock. Goldman cites a bleak outlook, but adds that the deals put AMR in a good spot when demand recovers. CEO Don Carty will take a 33% pay cut and forgo a bonus.
