INTERNET EBay off 4.5% on PayPal charge A federal prosecutor claims eBay's recently acquired online payment service firm helped fund illegal Web gambling. EBay says PayPal, which no longer services online gaming, acted in good faith. But if found liable, eBay will have to give up profit it made from money transfers to online gambling sites and would face criminal charges. Funding illicit activity violates the USA Patriot Act. PayPal settled similar charges last year for $200,000.
AOL launches broadband service The No. 1 ISP unveiled its high-speed content service, AOL for Broadband, which features AOL Time Warner content. America Online wants to lure more of its 35 mil members to use the service as they move to broadband. Users pay at least $14.95 a month on top of what they pay someone else for high-speed access. Microsoft's MSN also is touting a bring-your-own-access, or BYOA, option, for $9.95 a month.
