Byline: PETER BENESH
A child killed the first American to die in combat in Afghanistan. Sgt. Nathan Ross Chapman died near Khost, Afghanistan, on Jan. 4, 2002. His killer was just 14, witnesses said.
Before the Iraq war is over, allied troops will likely face thousands of child soldiers -- brainwashed kids. They belong to the Ashbal Saddam -- Saddam's Lions, the Iraqi tyrant's version of the Hitler Youth.
How will a U.S., U.K. or Australian soldier react when faced by a child with an AK-47?
Only one way makes sense, says retired Army Col. David Hackworth. "Shoot him. If you have a chance, shoot to wound."
Hackworth should know. He was a child soldier who went on to lead troops in Vietnam, sometimes facing Viet Cong children.
At age 14, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, lying about his age. It was 1945 and nobody asked for proof of age, says Hackworth, author of "Steel My Soldiers' Hearts."
