Minehan: Economy has softened
Boston Fed President Cathy Minehan expects the economy to regain momentum in the 2nd half. But she added: "The situation seems to have softened somewhat in recent months." The main question facing the economy is "whether business investment will pick up before consumption flags," she said. Inflation-adjusted spending has fallen for two straight months.
Japan's Nikkei, output tumble
The benchmark index fell 3.7% to 7,972.71, not far from a 20-year closing low as war fears, weak industrial output and concerns about the mysterious SARS virus all hurt stocks on the last day of Japan's fiscal year. Production fell 1.7% in Feb., worse than expected.
Paying taxes on phantom profits
Companies seem to be willing to pay taxes on profits they don't really earn, found a Michigan Business School study of 27 firms accused of accounting fraud. On average, the firms inflated their profits by $124.5 mil, boosting their taxes by $11.8 mil. All told, they paid $320 mil in taxes on $3.4 bil in bogus profits.
