Regional banks have remained a lonely pocket of strength in a nasty market the last 2 1/2 years. W Holding Co. has surfed that wave, rising more than threefold from December 2000 to August of last year. The stock has since formed a 7 1/2-month base. It found support at its 200-day moving average in January and now treads above its 50-day, 7% off its high.
