Wireless computing is spreading everywhere. Can wireless printing keep pace?
EFI Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. think so. In fact, both are coming out with new hardware and software so printers can hook into wireless networks. Both companies expect businesses to quickly adopt such mobile printing services.
"We estimate that 60% of all office workers are using some sort of mobile technologies right now," said Mike Weimar, EFI's director of marketing. "And they all want the ability to print on the run."
A year ago, Foster City, Calif.-based EFI unveiled its PrintMe Network. The software package is designed to let anyone print from any device at any location, thanks to easy-to-use Web browsing features.
"This system makes it so easy that if you can forward e-mail you can print," said Weimar.
EFI also makes tiny hardware devices embedded inside a printer. The devices, called controllers, act like the printer's brains, says Weimar.
