Even as as the tech industry struggles, its wares are quietly revolutionizing real estate development.
Look no further than Playa Vista, a 1,086-acre expanse in western Los Angeles that aims to be one of the most advanced high-tech communities ever built. The project's developers are joining forces with tech companies like CompUSA Inc. and LinkSys Group Inc. to outfit homes with speedy broadband Internet access and other high-tech niceties.
The result, Playa Vista officials say, will be a new breed of master-planned community.
"The dream is becoming a reality," said Steve Soboroff, Playa Vista president. "We're now at the stage of delivering."
CompUSA, which operates 230 stores in 90 metropolitan areas, will provide consulting services to new Playa Vista homeowners and offer select discounts on its computer products. Playa Vista will formally unveil the partnership on Tuesday.
The announcement comes a week after Playa Vista tapped Irvine, Calif.-based Linksys as the preferred provider of wireless and broadband networking hardware for the project's 3,246 planned dwellings. (For more on Linksys, see story below.)
