Jan. chip sales fell 2.4% vs. Dec.
But global sales rose 22% vs. a year ago to $12.2 bil, the Semiconductor Industry Association said. Still, the data were below forecasts as sales in all geographic markets fell 2%-3% vs. Dec. The SIA blamed seasonal weakness and said it still sees double-digit revenue growth this year. But Merrill Lynch's Joseph Osha doesn't expect unit sales, which have somewhat offset rapid price drops, to keep holding up.
Palm expects to miss views in Q3
The handheld PC firm expects sales of $205 mil-$210 mil to its latest failed bid to boost corporate sales. In Dec., Palm forecast sales of $230 mil-$250 mil and a "modest" operating loss. Analysts saw a 34-cent deficit. Palm didn't give specific loss guidance. Palm fell 11% to 10.32.
Forrester sees IT spending uptick
A poll of execs predicts a 1.9% hike this year. Though the big-spending financial sector will buy less tech gear, buying will rise 2.6% by midsize firms and 7.4% by finished goods manufacturers. Half are mulling business intelligence tools. Price and return on investment are big factors. In other tech surveys, IDC saw a slight jump; Goldman Sachs predicts a 1% drop.
