They're like two scorpions circling each other on the desert sand.

Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden both know they face death at American hands. In the meantime, they compete for the role of spiritual leader of Islam in the holy war against the infidel.

It's not the linkage the Bush administration wants to prove between al-Qaida and Iraq. But it's still a real link, at a psychological level.

War with Iraq is war on Islam, and I'm its defender, trumpets Saddam.

Saddam's an infidel, war with Iraq is war on Islam and I'm its defender, says bin Laden.

It's not about Islam. It's about ego, says psychiatrist Jerrold Post, founding director of the CIA's center for analysis of personality and political behavior.
