AutoTrader.com LLC is moving into the fast lane to chase after eBay Inc.'s car auction market.
Earlier this month, AutoTrader, which operates a Web site for selling used cars, launched its first online car auction service. It will compete with a similar service offered by online auctioneer eBay.
AutoTrader is one of the few auto e-commerce firms to survive the dot-com-boom-gone-bust.
It launched its auction service Jan. 1, the day after it ended a marketing partnership with eBay.
AutoTrader, a unit of car wholesale auctioneer Manheim Auctions Inc., also repurchased a small ownership stake in the firm from eBay.
AutoTrader and eBay parted ways six months before their agreement was set to expire, says AutoTrader Chief Executive Chip Perry.
