2Sharing your goals and dreams with the right people can mean the difference between a life of success and one of mediocrity. Accountability produces the leverage needed to follow through with your aspirations, says motivational speaker Todd Duncan.
Duncan's own transition from professional salesman to motivational speaker wouldn't have happened, he says, if he hadn't enlisted the support of respected speaker and author Tom Hopkins.
Fifteen years ago, after attending one of his seminars, Duncan shared with Hopkins his dream of being a speaker. What he didn't expect was Hopkins' inspiring response.
"So when are you going to be one?" Hopkins asked him. "If you don't know when you are going to be a speaker, you will not do the things today that will help you become one tomorrow. Pick a date and put it in your planner. Then write it on the back of your card and give me your card."
After Duncan did so, Hopkins said: "If you don't call me by this date to tell me you are a speaker, I will call you and ask you why you have not held to the commitment you just made to yourself."
Three weeks before the deadline he'd set four months earlier, Duncan was feeling the pressure. He was sure he'd fail. He reluctantly phoned Hopkins, who quickly put him back on track.
