Housing affordability improves

The National Association of Realtors' affordability index rose to 140.7 in Q4 '02 from 135.9 in Q3. That left it just shy of the record 141.3 in Q4 '01. The NAR cited lower mortgage rates and higher incomes.

Dec. card charge-offs near record

Bank card charge-offs rose to 7.5% from Nov.'s 7.1%, Standard & Poor's said. That's the 2nd-highest since the indexes were created in '92. March '02 set the record at 7.6%.

Oil supply will outpace demand

World oil production will rise to 90 mil barrels per day by '05 from 84 mil bpd this year, a joint study by Accenture Global Energy Practice and Cambridge Energy Research Associates predicted. By '10, production capacity is expected to climb to 99 mil bpd. The report also predicted that demand will only rise 88.5 mil bpd in '10 from 79 mil bpd now.
