Global chip sales rose 1.3% in '02
They grew to $140.7 bil last year, the Semiconductor Industry Association said. In '01 chip sales fell a record 32%. SIA sees a 19.8% rise in '03 to $169.3 bil, but has been wrong the past two years. A year ago SIA predicted 6% growth in '02. It still saw a 3% rise in its summer update.
CIO poll shows IT spending rises
CIOs said tech spending rose 4.4% in the 12 months to Jan., the first such rise since July, according to the CIO Magazine Tech Poll. But future growth plans remained modest due to weak profits. Security software was still the strongest sector, with over half of CIOs planning to boost such spending. The outlook for computer hardware weakened. Telecom gear also softened.
