Dec. Consumer Spending Rose 1Consumers pushed up spending 0.9%, the fastest pace in five months. The gain was largely built on zero-financing deals that lured car buyers to dealers. Spending rose 0.4% in Nov. Incomes rose a solid 0.4%, up from 0.3% in Nov. Disposable, or after-tax, income grew 0.4%, the same as in Nov. The personal savings rate dipped to 4.1% from 4.5% in Nov. His closest ally, Britain's Tony Blair, wants to press for another U.N. measure to get more allies aboard. The British public overwhelmingly opposes attacking Iraq. After a White House meeting, Bush and Blair proclaimed Saddam Hussein is still not disarming. Chip-Gear Upturn Hopes Dashed 3Applied Materials said its latest orders came in far below expectations. The No. 1 maker of equipment used to manufacture chips projected $1.56 bil in new orders for its Q1, which ended Jan. 26. That's 35% below the fourth quarter. It had expected new orders to fall 20%. Chicago Factory Index Healthier

4The region's factory index climbed to 56 in Jan., said the National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago. It was the best reading since 59.2 in May and topped analyst views of 53.0. The index climbed from Dec.'s 51.7. Firms filled new orders after drawing down inventories for almost three years. More on this page

Yen Sale, Factory Data Lift Dollar

5The dollar bought 119.87 yen, up from 118.96 Thurs., after the Bank of Japan admitted it covertly sold yen for dollars during mid-Jan. That's to keep the yen cheap and Japan's export economy on the recovery track. The euro traded near $1.0767, down from $1.0823, as the stronger Chicago purchasing manager report boosted the buck.
