Tobacco bosses last night denied they had plans to close two giant North-East cigarette factories with the loss of hundreds of jobs.

But Rothmans' managers confirmed they here holding with union officals to find ways of cutting costs. The Northern Echo revealed on Satirday how the company is seeking a series of efficiency improvements at plants in Darlington and Spennymoor, County Durham, which emplys about 1,400 people.

Union sources said they feared the plants could face closure unless the workforce complied with the cost-cutting plan.
