Le travail de Gillian Wearing, presente au Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal, sous le titre Mass Observation, traite de sujets a la mode. Ce n'est absolument pas un defaut, car il s'agit bien ici de preoccupations fondamentales de notre epoque qui se retrouvent traitees a travers les disciplines, la phiosophie, la litterature et les arts visuels. Comment reconnaitre la realite humaine dans sa singularite, comment la montrer ou la reactualiser, comment en transmettre l'experience, une fois que l'on s'est debarrasse des ideologies qui la masquent, que ce soit celle de l'individualisme bourgeois, du sujet moderne, ou de l'interiorite, bref de toutes les constructions identitaires qui ont conditionne nos habitudes de perception et de comportement? Ceci dit, lorsqu'un artiste intervient dans un sujet aussi actuel, il doit s'attendre a ce que l'actualite de son propos determine en meme temps les attentes du spectateur.
