Track designer responds
As the track designer for Barber Motorsports Park, I would like to respond to the June 16 letter from Paul Ragonese on the track's guardrail locations. While I always try to place barriers as far from the track edge as possible, as I was able to do at GingerMan, Carolina, Mid-America and Arizona Motorsports Park, their location is ultimately determined by the terrain. Barber's major elevation changes and severe drainage requirements, despite 1.8 million cubic yards of excavation, proved a limiting factor.
Nevertheless, Barber's barrier locations meet FIM (International Motorcycle Federation) Moto GP requirements and are set as far from the track edge as is possible in the most likely accident locations.
Tongue lashing the Bugatti
I just picked up the June 30 edition, with the Bugatti EB 16.4 Veyron on the cover. It looks like they took a Mitsubishi Eclipse and added a body-cladding package without bothering to paint it. Either that or it reminds me of my nine-year-old when she sticks out her tongue at us.
