Old joke with new twist: What's a race car driver's favorite wine? "I need more horsepower!''
That's not the case for retired Indy car driver Randy Lewis. From the whine of the engine to wine in the glass, Lewis has transitioned from racer to winemaker. "I've gone from my first love to my second,'' says Lewis. "Interestingly, both demand a total team effort with the singular commitment to be the best.''
Lewis Cellars is one of the finest wineries in Northern California's Napa Valley. It has seen steady success from Lewis' first bottle, vintage 1992. Lewis' primary focus is on Cabernets and Chardonnays, but for the last five years he has made a red "Alec's Blend,'' so named for his first grandson. You will also find a Merlot, two Syrahs and a Pinot Noir on the menu.
Lewis' racing career began in the 1970s and took him to Europe where he first encountered his love of wine. He returned to the States in the early '80s, racing his first full Indy car season in '87. ...
