Air Force hints that Desktop III may be scraped for new system

Unisys Corp.'s McLean-based government division's effort to save a $700 million computer deal with the military may have fizzled after Department of Defense officials implied they may start soliciting offers for a new contract.

A number of industry and military officials indicated off the record last week that the Air Force was preparing to solicit background information from vendors for a new personal computer contract which would replace the Desktop III deal Unisys currently holds. Such a solicitation of proposals would indicate - under a normal time frame of an award near the end of 1992 - an overlap of systems. The Unisys …
