Drivers on speed
What a concept: What used to be the fundamental rule of the road, keeping to the right, now gets its own month (BWTM, June 23). With the imposition of the 55-mph speed limit 30 years ago the government fostered a generation of drivers who simply do not know how to drive fast. They think they do-because they grew up with 55, they think 70 is real fast and so, by golly, they belong in that Fast Lane. They're oblivious to the fact that it takes only a few of their ilk to really clog things up.

I continue to be intrigued by the fact that at accidents along the highway we are urged by the police not to slow down. In SCCA racing, we are urged to reduce our speed at accident scenes. I realize the circumstances are not specifically analogous, but as a matter of safety, I find it difficult to imagine emergency workers really want us passing at full speed only a couple of feet away.
