2003 JUL 9 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - Cell wall components of Bacillus anthracis Sterne did not adversely affect the immune response generated by protective antigen, the main bacterial immunogen, according to a report in FEMS Immunology and Medical Microbiology.
"The UK human anthrax vaccine consists of the alum-precipitated culture supernatant of Bacillus anthracis Sterne," stated Leslie Baillie at the University of Maryland in the United States and colleagues at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) in the U.K. "In addition to protective antigen (PA), the key immunogen, the vaccine also contains a number of other bacteria- and media-derived proteins. These proteins may contribute to the transient side effects experienced by some individuals and could influence the development of the PA-specific immune response."
The investigators engineered recombinant S-layer cell wall proteins expressed by B. anthracis, EA1 and Sap, which are immunogenic in humans. Patients immunized with UK anthrax vaccine usually possess EA1-specific antibodies and, to a lesser extent, Sap-specific antibodies.
