The data storage industry next year will shift into a new phase that could help companies lower costs without sacrificing performance.
The idea is to get two now-incompatible disk drive technologies to work together.
Proponents say the result, Serial Attached SCSI, will satisfy the future needs of corporate data centers.
"Today you have different storage platforms," said Jeff Jenkins, a vice president of server storage and infrastructure at Hewlett-Packard Co. "We will now be able to standardize on one platform, and that will help standardize the data center."
It will also help lower the overall cost of data storage, which will certainly appeal to corporate customers.
Businesses are scrambling to digitize their data. Much of their information is currently stored on tape. Putting it on disk will make it more easily accessible and faster to retrieve.
