HSBC will cut 1,400 jobs in its U.K. head office due to a weak economy and higher costs. The bank expects half of them to occur via natural turnover, with the rest a mix of voluntary and forced layoffs.

USB analyst Howard Capek quit after an internal probe found in '99 he told an institutional investor he "wouldn't own a share" of HealthSouth. USB bars analysts from speaking about banking customers.

AT&T Wireless is cutting a low single-digit percentage of jobs. A 3% cut would be about 1,000 jobs. Last year the No. 2 U.S. wireless phone firm cut 2,000 jobs.
