Baxter cuts guidance, 2,500 jobs
In its third warning in four months, the medical device maker sees $1.95 to $2.05 a share for '03 ex-items, 7% below its April target. Analysts saw $1.99. Baxter will cut 26 blood plasma collection centers and cut 5% of its staff. It'll take a Q2 charge of $200 mil, or 30 cents for the job cuts. Baxter blamed intense competition in the plasma supply market. Baxter fell 2%.
Invitrogen buys Molecular Probes
The genetic research tools maker will pay $325 mil cash for Molecular Probes, a private maker of fluorescent markers to "label" molecules. Invitrogen expects the deal to close in Q3. Its shares leapt 17% to a 52-week high of 45.09.
Biomet earnings rose 20% in Q4
The maker of orthopedic devices met views for 30 cents a share. Sales grew 16% to $377.2 mil, a little above forecasts. Biomet will buy back 2 mil shares over the next year, plus up to $100 mil more. Rivals Smith & Nephew and Zimmer are vying for Swiss-based Centerpulse, which will increase competition.
