Costco aims to cut into hardware stores' market

Costco Wholesale Corp. is testing a thrust into yet another corner of retailing: the already crowded home-improvement business.

A 31,000-square-foot home-improvement center is opening this month at Costco's Southcenter outlet, and a companywide roll-out could follow next year if sales go well.

The store is where Costco four years ago first experimented with a grocery department - a highly successful concept that has been expanded throughout the 69-store chain.
