Some end-of-quarter window-dressing near the end of Monday's session spiked volume in an otherwise quiet day for NYSE stocks. The S&P 500 fell 0.2%, the Dow less than 0.1%.
Volume stayed light throughout the day, then surged. The end of a quarter often sees money managers closing positions to meet certain quotas.
ProAssurance dived 3.51 to 26.99. The medical professional liability insurance provider traded more than 1.6 million shares vs. its average daily volume of 120,000.
The firm said it expects second-quarter operating income of 22 cents to 27 cents per share. Analysts expect profit in the upper end of that range, at 26 cents a share. ProAssurance also announced plans to offer $90 million of convertible senior debentures in a private debt offering.
Mall-based clothing chain Aeropostale gapped down 1.54 to 21.48 on nearly three times its normal trade. The firm, which makes casual clothing for young men and women, filed a registration with the SEC for a secondary offering of 6.1 million shares on Friday. Aeropostale has doubled in price since early March.
