7 As instant messaging spreads, it's prompting the same question that e-mail did 10 years ago: Is this technology making us more or less productive?
To be sure, instant messaging can be a handy way to send quick notes. Unlike e-mail, you communicate in real time. That gives the message more urgency.
It often doesn't take as long as a phone call or require the same level of formality. Even so, it seems like a distraction.
IM notes blip onto your screen while you're working. They can be hard to ignore, and they're somewhat addictive. Once you start chatting, it can be difficult to stop.
That's why many executives simply do without the technology. But instant messaging can help you get work done, experts say. You just have to use it wisely and stay focused on the task at hand.
Let's say you have a problem or question that needs instant resolution. You could pick up the phone and try and find the answer. But a quick IM note may do the trick, and then you're back to work. Your fingers didn't even need to leave the keyboard.
