DaimlerChrysler revamps to save
The automaker will herd development for its varied truck lines into a single unit and standardize parts across many models, saving several hundred million dollars a year by '06 or '07. That should boost earnings as sales plateau. It's struggled to see gains from the '98 merger of Daimler-Benz and Chrysler or later stakes in Mitsubishi and Hyundai.
Union breaks off Goodyear talks
The tire maker fell 6% to 5.25 after the United Steelworkers of America ended contract talks over the weekend. The union said it's ready to strike, but as of Monday morning hadn't given the required 72-hour notice. Goodyear also has to give 72-hour notice to lock out union workers.
