When a private alarm goes off in Rio Rancho, it could be the sound of someone getting a bill from the city.

The Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety has adopted a new ordinance to encourage residents and businesses to get their alarm systems under control, because police and emergency service workers are getting buried in false alarms.

The Rio Rancho Alarm Ordinance, set to take effect Tuesday, requires citizens to register their alarm systems and take responsibility for faulty alerts. Alarm owners will be fined for unnecessary calls. The ordinance also zeros in on businesses that sell …
