MUNICH, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 2003
Siemens (NYSE:SI) (FWB:SIE) is building a complete GSM/GPRS 1900 mobile network for mobile operator Colombia Movil in Colombia - as sole supplier. The Colombian operator has chosen the mobile Group of Siemens (Siemens mobile) also to equip its network with EDGE technology. This is the fourth EDGE contract Siemens mobile has concluded around the world. The order is worth more than 65 million US dollars.
Siemens mobile is supplying and installing transmit and receive stations as well as switching technology for Colombia Movil's GSM/GPRS 1900 network and equipping the network with EDGE technology. Based on the GSM standard, EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) permits even higher data rates than GPRS. The technology enables mobile operators to offer customers services with high data volume such as exchanging videos, music clips and photos via mobile phone, interactive games and Location Based Services. Colombia Movil intends to put its network into operation throughout the country in October of this year.
"The company's many years of experience with GSM technology and its strong local presence were key factors in our decision to select Siemens", explains Mauricio Mesa, President of Colombia Movil. "The GPRS and EDGE solutions provided by Siemens will, in addition, allow us to offer our customers new and exciting high bandwidth services."
