New data from clinical studies presented at the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) congress in Lisbon, Portugal, this month has demonstrated that licofelone (ML 3000) has comparable efficacy to conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and selective COX-2 inhibitors in the treatment of osteoarthritis, but with improved gastrointestinal and general tolerability.

New mode of action

Licofelone is the first in a new class of analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs for the treatment and signs of OA. The agent has a unique mode of action in that it inhibits all three major enzymes involved in arachidonic acid metabolism: 5-lipooxygenase; COX-1; and COX-2.
