2003 JUL 2 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Measles was eradicated in Haiti after an outbreak occurred in 2000.
"On 8 March 2000 a case of laboratory-confirmed measles was detected in Haiti. Over the ensuing months, an explosive epidemic occurred that spread to eight of the nine departments of Haiti, including the nation's capital, Port au Prince. After peaking in the last half of November 2000, the epidemic began a rapid decline," scientists writing in the Journal of Infectious Diseases report.
"The date of onset for the last confirmed case was 26 September 2001," said Linda Venczel and colleagues at the Pan American Health Organization and the Haiti Ministry of Public Health and Population. "During the 18 months of the epidemic, 1,149 cases were confirmed.
