After the United Stated defeated Spain in Cuba and the Philippines in 1898, the United States was granted possession of the Philippines. However, the Filipinos, having just fought a bloody revolution against Spain, were not about to become colonized to another imperialist power. Instead, they embark on a guerrilla war against U.S. forces. As the hostilities were coming to an end, a surprise attack signaled by church bells killed 50 American soldiers.
